La Gagiandra is a cooperative, non-profit organization based in Venice.

We offer the opportunity of a paying job to disabled people and those suffering hardship. The Cooperative's main objective is the social reintegration of of those living in situations of precariousness, vulnerability or disability.

We work closely with the Casa dell'Ospitalità, a civic foundation that welcomes the homeless.

Gagiandra is the Venetian word for tortoise. We love it for its slow ways in these times of senseless hurry. A slowness that is not inertia but a persistent seeking after a particular perception.

Our enterprise in fact is founded on quality craft work and the desire to explore sustainable ways of living.

Every object, from design to finishing touches, is overseen by Irene Gomez, Manifattura's artistic and creative director. A Venetian by choice, after an artistic apprenticeship divided between Granada and Rome, she has latterly directed her energies towards textile craftwork and creative recycling as an art form. Colour and an original interpretation of form are her watchwords.

Irene brings together the precision craftsmanship of the artisan with the uniqueness of artistic inspiration. Her works are intuitions concretised into original one-offs, symbols of a way of being-in-the-world as free and authentic as those who choose to wear and to use them.
